About General Cepeda
General Cepeda lies in southeastern Coahuila at about 25°22′ N and 101°28′ W; the municipality covers 3,517 km² at an average elevation of 1,400 metres above sea level. Mean annual temperature is 18.3 °C with a 13.6 °C daily range and average extremes of 30 °C in May and June and 6 °C in January; annual rainfall averages 264.8 mm, so growers depend on groundwater. The vineyards sit on plains and low hills between 1,250 and 1,350 metres, within the Saltillo–Parras fold subprovince of the Sierra Madre Oriental, and grow varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Malbec. The municipality is known for its palaeontology: the Rincón Colorado museum holds fossils more than 72 million years old, and some 40,000 petroglyphs have been recorded at sites such as Narigua and El Gavillero. Viñedo Amonites is a winery in General Cepeda, Coahuila. Per its own website, the vines were planted on 25 April 2021 at 1,300 metres above sea level, at 3,333 plants per hectare, around remains already on the land: ammonites, petrified wood and petroglyphs. The vineyard is voluntarily protected as a natural reserve, certified since 2022, covering 62 hectares. It opens Friday to Sunday for tours and tastings, and has lodging on site.
